The line consists of three dairy flavors—Raspberry Cheesecake, Toffee Brown Sugar and Vanilla Caramel Swirl--and three oat-based flavors--Brown Sugar Honeycomb, Triple Chocolate Swirl and Vanilla Wildberry Swirl—all made with premium fruits, chocolate and flavors.
“We haven’t been this excited about a product launch since we introduced our vegan line eight years ago. Ice cream bars have long been a dream for us at Van Leeuwen,” says Ben Van Leeuwen, co-founder and CEO. “We’ve spent the past 12 months perfecting every element and we are blown away by what we have been able to create. Our six ice cream bar creations feature the ice cream and vegan ice cream our customers know and love, enrobed with thick, custom-blended, high-quality fair trade chocolate and crunchy coatings that create an entirely new Van Leeuwen experience. They aren’t keto, low fat or sugar free. But they taste good and will make you happy!”
The debut of the Ice Cream Bars is a nostalgic addition to the brand’s product line as Van Leeuwen’s co-founders Pete and Ben Van Leeuwen grew up driving an ice cream truck in the summer and selling ice cream on sticks.
The bars are making their debut in four-packs through Van Leeuwen’s online store for nationwide shipping.
The bars will be available in select grocery stores across the country beginning in March 2021, including Whole Foods, Giant, Central Market, Big Y and Heinen’s.

ICE CREAM BRINGS PEOPLE TOGETHER (posted January 26, 2021)
Jeni’s Splendid serves up President Biden’s favorite combination.
The day after the inauguration of Joe Biden as the 46th president of the United States of America, Jeni’s Splendid, an Ohio-based ice cream company, launched a variety tailored to Biden’s favorite order.
President Biden has been frequenting some of Jeni’s scoop shops since 2012, since he and founder Jeni Britton Bauer have become friends.
To commemorate his first days in the Oval Office, Britton Bauer produced a batch of White House Chocolate Chip.
This flavor was inspired by the president’s favorite order: a double scoop of chocolate chip ice cream on a waffle cone.
The commemorative flavor is sold by the pint at scoop shops and online, only for a limited time.
It includes crunchy chocolate flakes from Theo Chocolate and little pieces of chocolate-covered waffle cones swirled in vanilla ice cream.
Drawing upon President Biden’s inauguration speech, Britton Bauer described the flavor as one that “can bring people together.” She says this was her mission when she first founded the company in 2002.
“We are launching this flavor with a vision for building a brighter future in mind. We must support the work of bringing America together and of building a future for us all,” Britton Bauer said in a media statement. “White House Chocolate Chip is a flavor perfectly positioned for meeting on common ground. It’s a play on Joe’s favorite flavor, and, like Joe, easy to love. It is meant to be a token of appreciation for the moment. And, I hope, a beacon of light and love.”
By the way, she set online orders to a maximum of two pints, and it still sold out in hours.

MAN’S BEST FRIEND HAS ANOTHER ICE CREAM OPTION (posted January 13, 2021)

Doggie Desserts are specifically formulated for dogs with a sunflower butter base.

The two varieties were named after real dogs in the Ben & Jerry’s office: an affectionate Frenchie and a rescue mutt of mixed heritage.
As a dog-friendly workplace, the Ben & Jerry’s headquarters in Vermont often has as many as 40 pups curled up under desks, keeping employees company. Of course, pandemic protocol is in place.
All of the ingredients used in Doggie Desserts can be found in current Ben & Jerry’s ice cream recipes.
“We know our fans love their dogs and treat them like family,” says Lindsay Bumps, global marketing specialist at Ben & Jerry’s who also is a certified veterinary technician. “We created this product line so pups can enjoy something even better than belly rubs. Doggie Desserts are the sweetest treat they’ll ever put their paws on.”

BETTER-FOR-YOU NIGHTTIME ICE CREAM (posted December 29, 2020)
Nightfood Inc., the company pioneering the category of better-for-you nighttime snacks formulated for better sleep, kicks off 2021 with updated packaging on its ice cream.
The updated packaging features Nightfood’s familiar Cravemonsters in a bold new design.
All flavors share a new deep blue background for stronger shelf-presence while delivering additional nighttime cues to the consumer. Most importantly, the front panel is now singularly focused on communicating the brand’s unique point of differentiation and key consumer benefit: Nightfood’s “sleep-friendly” nutritional profile.
“Nightfood was created specifically by our sleep experts with ingredients for better sleep,” says Sean Folkson, CEO. “Today’s supermarket shopper is more rushed and distracted than ever, especially with COVID. A brand needs to drive home one thing in the first millisecond the consumer sees that pack. Now our key benefit, captured in the phrase ‘Sleep-Friendly,’ is literally front and center on every pint of Nightfood.”
Nightfood coined the phrase “sleep-friendly” to describe snacks formulated with a focus on delivering the nutritional foundation for a better night of sleep.
Some of the sleep-friendly characteristics of Nightfood ice cream include more prebiotic fiber, casein protein, calcium, magnesium and zinc when compared to regular ice cream, as well as less sugar, less fat and fewer calories. These attributes are called out in detail on the back of each pint.
The packaging updates were made based on information gathered during Nightfood’s first 18 months on shelf in major supermarkets.

ANIMAL-FREE WHEY PROTEIN “ICE CREAM” (posted December 8, 2020)
The Urgent Company introduces Brave Robot, an ethical frozen dessert indulgence made with a one-of-a-kind animal-free whey protein produced by Perfect Day, which is identical to the whey protein found in cows’ milk.

VEGAN FROZEN DESSERT MADE WITH ANIMAL-FREE DAIRY PROTEIN (posted November 18, 2020)
Graeter’s Ice Cream introduces Perfect Indulgence.
America’s oldest family-owned craft ice cream maker has teamed up with food technology company Perfect Day to launch Perfect Indulgence, Graeter’s first-ever line of vegan products.
The debut comes in six of Graeter’s traditional flavors. They are: Black Cherry Chocolate Chip, Chocolate, Chocolate Chip, Cookies & Cream, Mint Chocolate Chip and Oregon Strawberry.
“The taste of Perfect Indulgence is exactly what our customers have come to expect after 150 years of bringing them irresistibly indulgent ice cream,” says Richard Graeter, fourth-generation family member and president and CEO of Graeter’s Ice Cream. “We are excited to finally be able to serve authentic Graeter’s indulgence to guests who choose to eat vegan or cannot enjoy our regular ice cream due to a lactose intolerance. Until now, we couldn’t put our name on a vegan product because it simply did not live up to our standards. But now, with Perfect Day, we can. Enjoy!”
This marks a major innovation milestone for the ice cream brand. This significant achievement allows Graeter’s to make a product that is virtually indistinguishable from traditional ice cream by using animal-free protein from microflora rather than cows, which makes for a kinder, greener and more sustainable future, according to the company.

SELF-SERVE MOCHI COOLERS RETURN (posted October 7, 2020)
Bubbies Ice Cream is rolling out individually wrapped mochi balls for its retail coffin freezers.
Mochi ice cream is a bite-sized ice cream treat wrapped in a sweetened, soft and chewy rice dough.
The new packaging marks the reopening of Bubbies Mochi Self-Serve Freezers that have long been a grab-and-go snack destination for customers looking to mix and match their favorite flavors. INDIAN-INSPIRED ICE CREAM COMES IN GLOBAL FLAVORS (posted September 23, 2020)
The Food Shop introduces Gallivant Mawa Ice Cream.
Mawa ice cream is made with milk and mawa, which are South Asian milk solids.
Mawa is prepared by slow cooking full-fat milk for many hours, reducing it to one-fifth its volume by removing moisture. The solids have rich, silky caramelized notes, which when used in the manufacture of ice cream, results in a “creamier than gelato” frozen dessert, according to Snehee Chaplot, founder and CEO.
Mawa ice cream was originally created by Persian chefs as an offering to the king and his royal family more than 700 years ago. They are now an integral part of the festivities and cultures of the Persian and South Asian sub-continents.
“Many of us have a memory of an authentic local ice cream either while visiting our loved ones or while we are on our own travel adventures around the world. Once we come back to our homes, we miss that one flavor that completely blew our minds,” says Chaplot. “I started thinking, having traveled to nearly 60 countries and being introduced to the diverse authentic culinary flavors and cuisines from around the world, why not recreate these flavors.”
Chaplot created nine flavors of Gallivant Mawa Ice Cream for the initial rollout. They are: African Chocolate, Chinese Black Sesame, Guatemalan Cardamom, Indian Mango, Japanese Matcha, Madagascar Vanilla, Persian Pistachio, Thai Coconut and Vietnamese Coffee.
Since August 2019, the company has been selling its frozen desserts in Texas and nationwide direct-to-consumers via its website. In Houston, the company’s headquarters, delivery is free.
Beginning this month, the brand is launching into select retail grocery stores in Arkansas, California, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas and Washington State, as the first phase of its long-term strategy to become a national brand.
“Gallivant Mawa Ice Cream is the only one of its kind in the U.S.,” says Chaplot. “We don’t compromise when it comes to taste. Our customers tell us over and over again that Gallivant tastes creamy and delicious, which is why we’re getting so many repeat buyers.”

NUTRIENT-DENSE ICE CREAM CUPS FOR KIDS (posted June 8, 2020)
At a time when ice cream brands for health-conscious consumers were flooding the market, Nicole Frankel saw a void: The new products catered to adults, not the demographic that was the most likely to scream for ice cream—children.
She developed a nutrient-dense ice cream that always has a fruit or vegetable as the primary ingredient and contains 40% less sugar than other leading brands.
Yum Actually’s unique flavors include Butternut Squash Butterscotch, Caramel Sweet Potato, Creamy Honey Banana and Yummy Mango.
It wasn’t the void in the market that initially got Frankel into the ice cream-making business, rather, it was her very young daughter who simply refused to eat fruits and vegetables. Frustrated but determined, she resorted to mashing up various superfoods, such as bananas and sweet potatoes, and transforming them into something that her daughter would never turn down: ice cream. At first, she eyed the frozen snack with skepticism, but after taking a couple of tastes, she looked up at her mom and said, “It’s yum, actually!” A product was born.
Launched in August 2019, Yum Actually was initially sold in independent health food stores in Manhattan, but distribution has expanded to include several chain stores. Availability will increase this year to include stores across the Northeast.

PICKLE-FLAVORED ICE CREAM (posted May 26, 2020)
Nightfood will soon be adding Pickles for Two to its line of sleepy-time ice cream.
The better-for-you ice cream company was recently recognized as the Official Ice Cream of the American Pregnancy Association (APA).
“Pickles For Two is delicious, creamy and cool as a cucumber,” says Nightfood CEO Sean Folkson. “As the official ice cream of the APA and the recommended ice cream for millions of expecting moms, Nightfood has fully accepted and embraced the serious responsibility of satisfying the cravings that most pregnant women encounter.”
“How could we not do pickle-flavored ice cream? The addition of this unique and share-able flavor will help elevate the profile and awareness of the Nightfood brand within the pregnancy community through social media and other word of mouth,” says Folkson.
Nightfood’s nutritional profile is significantly superior for pregnant women compared to regular ice cream, which is why the Nightfood brand received the endorsement of the APA and why it is quickly becoming the preferred ice cream among pregnant women around the country.
Nightfood is significantly higher in calcium, magnesium, zinc, protein and fiber than regular ice cream, according to the company. Those qualities, along with less sugar, fewer calories and a lower glycemic profile, make Nightfood an objectively better option for pregnant women. Setting it further apart from any other ice cream on the market, Nightfood contains amino acids to aid digestion and fight heartburn, a major problem for many women especially in the second and third trimesters.
Having just completed their highest-volume quarter ever, Nightfood is now available in major divisions of Albertsons (Jewel-Osco, Shaw’s and Star Market), Kroger (Harris Teeter), as well as all Lowe’s Foods and other independent retailers. The ice cream can also be purchased via the company’s website, where pregnant women receive free shipping on their first order of 8 pints or more with discount code “pregnant.”

FARM-TO-TABLE FROZEN DESSERTS (posted March 30, 2020)
The Frozen Farmer uses fruits and vegetables in its made-from-scratch frozen desserts.
The third-generation family farmers-- Kevin and Katey Evans—are chefs, and pitched their business on the March 27, 2020, edition of Shark Tank, where they received an investment offer to grow the business.
Their farm serves more than 100 groceries with their homegrown produce; unfortunately, there’s lots of product that does not meet the grocery grade because of how it looks.
“More than 20% of the fruits and veggies in America are too ugly to make it off the farm and on the grocery store shelf. For farm families like mine, this means a major loss in profit,” says Katey. “Finally, one night we were kicking around ideas of how to make money on all this otherwise wasted fruit that tasted perfectly good, despite the way it looked and it came to us. We could make ice cream and sorbet with fresh fruit from the farm.”
The company now makes homemade superpremium ice cream, nice cream (a blend of ice cream and sorbet) and dairy-free, gluten-free, fat-free sorbet.
Their shop is located on Route 404, a prime hub to the Delaware and Maryland beaches. They also have a mobile food truck that caters off-site fairs, festivals, private events, parties and weddings.
The Frozen Farmer currently wholesales its ice cream, nice cream and sorbet to more than a dozen different restaurants, shops and markets in Delaware and Maryland.
